Annual General Meeting

On Sunday 10 July an appreciative group of members braved the cold to attend our Annual General Meeting and hear guest speaker Steve Yorke. The advertised title, 'Environmental Management of Heritage Landscapes with reference to "The Briars" as a case study' was only part of the story, as Steve told anecdotes about his experience as manager of important heritage properties, explained procedures such as succession planning for trees, and answered a wide range of questions.

The meeting concluded with afternoon tea provided by audience members.

Matthew Flinders' 1804 Map of Australia - the campaign to "Bring it Home"

In 1804 while imprisoned by the French in Mauritius, Matthew Flinders completed a map showing his circumnavigation of the continent, which he titled ‘Australia or Terra Australis’. This original map is stored at the UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton Somerset.

Flinders returned to England in 1810, and his account of his explorations, A Voyage to Terra Australis, was published in 1814. A new map with the order reversed to ‘Terra Australis or Australia’ accompanied this two-volume work.  This was the first map of Australia to be published, and it is this map that is normally reproduced.

Matthew Flinders died on the day before the publication of his monumental work, and thus 2014 is the bicentenary of his death. To mark this anniversary, a campaign has been launched to have the 1804 map brought to Australia.

The website of Greg Hunt, federal member for Flinders, includes an online petition Bringing Home the Birth Certificate of Our Nation.

There is evidence to suggest that this 1804 map was not the first use of the term Australia on a map.  But this quibble aside, the 1804 map is of considerable historic significance for Australia, and anyone wishing to support the call for the British Hydrographic Office to relinquish the map can add their name to the online petition.

Poems of a Peninsula Pioneer, the work of Henry Tuck, 1845 - 1930

Henry Tuck, son of the original Flinders district pioneer Henry Tuck senior, was born on the McCrae property at Arthur's Seat and spent all his life on the peninsula, mostly with his family at Manton's Creek, Flinders. Many of his poems were published in the 'Peninsula Post', with 50 of his 120 poems chosen for the book.

The poems and accompanying biographical and historical information paint a picture of life in the early pioneering years when Henry and his three brothers, renowned stockmen, mustered wild cattle on the unfenced peninsula. The poems speak of the life of the day which involved hard work but also a loving family and friends - and of the sadness of friends and family lost in WWI.

The book is available from Former Glory, Shop 3, Cook Street, Flinders or from FDHS, PO Box 99 Flinders, 3929, - Cost $15, includng postage.
